Top 10 African Tunes of the Decade

Algerian raï, Congolese soukous, Senegalese mbalax: the music of Africa is as diverse as its people, climate, food – as diverse as, well, Africa. The tie that seems to hold the continent’s music together lies in its ability to hypnotize, to start your legs moving before you realize they’re doing so, to make joy rise up and provoke a sing-along regardless of the fact that you don’t speak a word of Swahili or Bambara. Here are my African favorites of the decade – each of which represents rich memories of celebration and dancing as those were the times that I turned to these oeuvres: daily dance-a-thons rituals with my brother to Mariama by Pape & Cheikh, coasting through the Atlas mountains of Morocco with Tinariwen leading the way… Just a few more hours and we will be turning the page, welcoming a new year, a new decade – I can’t wait to see what the world of musicians have waiting in the wings for us all! Tracks after the jump!

Cool Cats Girls 'N' Cats #5 Tee

Cool Cats Girls ‘n’ Cats #5 Tee

Since I already touched upon the illustrative prowess of So-Me in our Beatbox post for the top 10 music videos of the decade, I figured, might as well cover the bases and show off the artist’s bountiful tee collection as well. This year, Ed Banger Records and So-Me had the splendid idea to gather together their projects – music, apparel and the like – under the moniker Cool Cats. The result is a site full of the electro-balls-to-the-wall stuff the two are known for: from Justice EPs to SebastiAn tees. Sure, the tees will run you a tad more than your daily duds, but this is collector’s booty! Most styles were made in limited edition batches of 100 – so snag ‘em before they’re gone forever!

The Antlers at Vibromonk Records in Brooklyn, NY

Last Friday, December 18th, the Iggy crew headed out for a second live session at Brooklyn’s Vibromonk Records. Our recording just a few months earlier with Youssou N’Dour at this quirky industrial space was such a blast that we quickly snatched up the chance to return – this time with Brooklyn wunder-band, The Antlers. Here are some behind the scenes snaps of the session with Peter, Darby, and Mike – and, not to worry – videos of the shoot will be up in January!

Beatbox » Top 10 Electro of the Decade!

Lo's List's Top 10 Electro Tracks of the Decade

Although the exact parameters of what makes a track Electro are a little fuzzy and certainly up for debate, the universal ants-in-your-pants, get-up-and-dance, party-all-night-long vibe is what makes this genre so approachable. Mixing the best of 80’s synth, grimy house beats, and a neon-bright dose of pop, a solid Electro single always adds a skip to my step (and makes for a great addition to any runner’s playlist). Here is my round-up for the Oughties’ best of the genre: collabs, remixes, totally underground, kinda skeevy: there’s something for everyone… All tracks after the jump!

Beatbox » Top 10 French Rap of the Decade!

Top 10 French Rap Singles of the Decade

I bought a little album called L’Ecole Du Micro D’Argent by IAM just a dozen years ago and since then, French rap has been a staple in my musical diet. I’ve discovered some incredible start-to-finish albums along the way (Taxi OST, Freeman’s L’Palais De Justice, Oxmo Puccino’s L’Amour Est Mort) along with a solid podcast: Yo La La! (although no more new episodes are being produced, you can listen to the entire archive here). I hope these ten tracks serve as a cross-section of what is best about the genre: incredible scratching, great collaborations, Arabic left and right, a diversity of regional slang, and some badass chicks who can really hold their own. Allons-y! All tracks after the jump!

Beatbox » Top 10 (+3) Singles of the Decade!

Top 10 Singles of the 2000's

Ok – the decade is on the out & we’re left with a whole slew of amazing music to help us cling to the memories. This week at MTV Iggy we’re putting together a ridiculous amount of Top 10 music lists, from staff favorites, to my must-hear Electro of the decade, etc, etc… To kick it off on Lo’s List, here is my desperate attempt to choose just 10 tracks overall (I failed, as there are 13 – but that’s a lucky number, so, zip it!). Menomena, Beirut, MGMT, Fugazi: I’m sorry. There wasn’t enough room. Also, I didn’t include African stuff, French rap, or most Electro since I’m curating separate lists for those… All tracks after the jump!

In the Bag » The Complete Carry-On

Peasants and Travelers Doctor's Bag

This holiday season, whether you’re driving over the hill and through the woods or taking a transatlantic aeroplane to get to grandma’s house, the better you pack the smoother your journey will be. The comfort of long travels comes down to one essential piece of luggage: the Carry-On (or, if you’re roadtripping, the one bag you don’t chuck in the trunk). When the wonderful Jee Kim, founder of Peasants and Travelers, sent us the P&T Doctor’s Bag to test drive, I immediately knew that this hard-shelled beauty was born to make my flights to Marseille and Tel Aviv more bearable…

Beatbox » Minilogue + Ljudbilden

I’ve been sitting on this killer music video animated and directed by Kristofer Ström for Malmö, Sweden-based electro-duo Minilogue (Sebastian Mullaert & Marcus Henriksson) for too long now and had to spread the wealth as we head into what looks like a dreary, rainy weekend here in NYC… So, throw on your brightest duds and dance along with this rambunctious round-up of animated monstrosities as they run-a-muck around town! For more on the music, check out the Minilogue MySpace page!

Beatbox » Pink Noise Plays Clusterf#ck Showcase Tonight @ Glasslands

Pink Noise CMJ Glasslands Show

Any CMJ showcase called Clusterf#ck gets a couple snarky brownie points from me. Throw in a venue (Glasslands in Williamsburg) known for nudging bands like MGMT & Yeasayer into the spotlight and the potential for a effing good night is solid. Oh, did I mention? Brooklyn-based Israeli alt/punk band Pink Noise (think Sonic Youth & PJ Harvey’s lovechild) starts the killer lineup at 9pm…

Beatbox » Choir of Young Believers

I’m one of the oddballs that can play the same song or album on repeat for days on end. The thing is, music tends to blur with everything around you and, months or years later, when you trip over the song in a playlist, not only are you rediscovering a gem, but along with it smells, tastes, all those memories gathered during that first listen. Bob Dylan’s I Want You from his Live at Budokan album triggers springtime at my grandmother’s house in Provence, Tinariwen’s Aman Iman: Water is Life carries me across the Atlas mountains of Morocco. It’s one of those scientific magic tricks that everyone should leverage…

Beatbox » Catch the Flying Lotus!

Flying Lotus

You must listen to Flying Lotus. The mastermind beat-making great-nephew of music legend Alice Coltrane, Steven Ellison puts together some very eclectic & modern beats, full of pixel-ish samples that spark a hint of nostalgia for more than a few of us 80’s Nintendo generation kids. I doubt you’ll make it through half of “1983″ without shaking your tail feathers or breakdancing on your kitchen floor…

Beatbox » Little Miss Moffatt

Eeek! Fun fun fun video from Canadian electro-folk singer / songwriter Ariane Moffatt! This amazing celebration of wacky caricatures was realized and animated by Baillat Cardell & Fils, another très talented team hailing from Québec. There’s a high-res version of the video at Ariane’s site plus all the regular details: discography, show dates, etc. I must say, she’s got some catchy little jazzy Franco-tunes…
