Ok, ok. So the ball & chain is right: I have a bag fetish. It’s actually a container obsession: our house is full of oddly shaped jars, vintage cans, quirky bowls & trays – all holding tchotkies I’ve gleaned over many years of foraging flea markets, boutiques and the like. But, yes, bags, pouches, fabric zippie things – sign me up. Now, although not one of the gazillion New Yorkers that swears by her bike (I’ve purchased a few over my NYC years, subsequently biked to some rendez-vous and parked the thing, only to leave it there, abandoned forever), I have officially fallen for the cowgirl meets fashionista meets bike-messenger accessories over at Death and Texas’ Etsy store. My favorite? The Handlebar Bag, a convertable clutch, shoulder purse, fannypack-for-bike wonder that might result in me buying a bike to use it with:

“Death and Texas may sound like a dire name, but I’ve always found inspiration in the images and aura surrounding this great state. You name it: rodeo costumes, tooled leather, old cowboy boots, equestrian gear, horse tack…I even like the way the landscape photographs, like in old movies where the sunset casts a pink glow over everything and still it all looks so tough…”
Another fantastic innovation from this Dallas, Texas designer is the U Lock Holster and Hip Pouch. Definitely the most annoying city biker side effect is holding on to that retardedly heavy, clunky lock when you’re pedaling around town. Fumble no longer with the DNTX Holster, which can hold a U Lock on its own or in combination with the pouch, which has just the right amount of room for the essentials: your wallet, iPod (erm, perhaps not while biking), and keys:

The Death and Texas Etsy shop offers the accessories in a few different colors (blue, natural, black, and red) and patterns (blue striped ticking and dark blue, green & black plaid) as well as some nifty belts to get your holster and/or hip pouch up and running! If you’re in the Williamsburg, Brooklyn area, you can also swing by the Brookfarm General Store (on South 6th btwn Berry and Wythe), which, alongside a plethora of nostalgic whatnots, carries several DNTX designs.
