Blabla Shane and Mini Shane Boogaloos

For those of you that caught the edge-of-your-seat action of the Super Bowl last week (yay Saints!), you might have noticed a ROTFL commercial for the Kia Sorento (with music by The Heavy!) that involved a sock monkey, an alien Gumby cyclops, a windup tin robot, teddy bear, and the peculiar looking, prison bird-striped, shaggier-than-thou character from Blabla, Mr. X. I’ve been a huge fan of this childrens toy company since I stumbled upon the site a while back and was thrilled to see the little hairy monster soaking up his 15 minutes of fame. And, it reminded me that I should share the Blabla wealth with you all…

“Blabla means nothing and everything, it’s a swirl of letters flying, a small word for a big idea… Happiness fits in the palm of the hand. Blabla searches for beauty, authenticity, and laughter.”

The concept behind Blabla took shape back in 2001 during a trip to Peru, where the founders, Susan Pritchett and Florence Wetterwald, happened upon villages of expert knitters going back generations. The two women established a working relationship with the artisans, starting first with a line of sweaters (with finger puppets peeking out of the pockets) and hats, that soon grew to include rattles, backpacks, mobiles, blankets, and more. Inspired by the beloved French cartoon Barbapapa (which means “father’s beard” and cotton candy (!) in French), the Blabla characters are bright and wonderfully nonsensical! All the toys are knit with 100% natural, hand-picked Peruvian cotton, which means they’re super soft!
