Shutterbug » Pink Noise Does CMJ (+ pouring rain)

Faced with pouring rain, back-to-back shows, and acoustically-iffy venues, Pink Noise set out on Saturday night for a second evening of CMJ showcases in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. A palpable sense of panic hung on the band as we lugged amps, pedals, guitars and a drum kit from Zebulon (where they played an amazing set on Thursday) to Glasslands down the street… (any rocker-envy I had just, poof, vanished at this point in the soggy evening). Although the first gig was pretty much a private concert for the smattering of early birds that were roaming around Glasslands, the scene at Shea Stadium in Bushwick was over-the-top lively: drunk, hapless hipsters tripping over microphone stands & wires, teetering over the balcony edge and spitting beer onto the cement floor…
Far more in their element, the band whirled through a second set, trying to circumvent the very drunk singer of the next band (who still managed to steal the mic from Sulami and croon along to a few songs). Kids were dancing in their priceless over-thought closing night CMJ outfits, guitar strings broke, mic stands crashed to the ground – and the band was just laughing, loving it, playing as hard and loud as they could.
