Ever since we laid eyes on Brook&Lyn’s bewitching “Deflected” collection, we were taken by the brand’s unexpected and original approach to jewelry design. Combining natural materials with bold shapes, their work gracefully walks the line between delicate and strong, such that we see our own femininity reflected in its construct.
DEERDANA’s minimalist portrait tees have been on our fashion radar for some time. But when Jay-Z broke out their Basquiat for his now-famous subway ride to Brooklyn a couple weeks ago, we knew the NYC brand had hit the tipping point. Featuring a mötley crüe of iconic characters hand-scrawled onto classic white cotton tees, DEERDANA takes a wardrobe staple and gives it the tastemaker treatment. They also have their finger firmly on the pulse. From Rick Ross to Frida Kahlo to Maggie Smith’s Countess on “Downton Abbey,” their subjects transcend pop- and sub-cultures, and can best be qualified as, quite simply, cool.
Ok, ok. So the ball & chain is right: I have a bag fetish. It’s actually a container obsession: our house is full of oddly shaped jars, vintage cans, quirky bowls & trays – all holding tchotkies I’ve gleaned over many years of foraging flea markets, boutiques and the like. But, yes, bags, pouches, fabric zippie things – sign me up. Now, although not one of the gazillion New Yorkers that swears by her bike (I’ve purchased a few over my NYC years, subsequently biked to some rendez-vous and parked the thing, only to leave it there, abandoned forever), I have officially fallen for the cowgirl meets fashionista meets bike-messenger accessories over at Death and Texas’ Etsy store…
Nope. Not a bug fan. Somehow, I’ve been designated the official role of Bug-Squasher at home and am certainly not fond of those duties either. Oh! What’s that there? A shiny, bits & pieces, watch-innards mechanical bug? Well, that’s a whole different cup of tea!
Any CMJ showcase called Clusterf#ck gets a couple snarky brownie points from me. Throw in a venue (Glasslands in Williamsburg) known for nudging bands like MGMT & Yeasayer into the spotlight and the potential for a effing good night is solid. Oh, did I mention? Brooklyn-based Israeli alt/punk band Pink Noise (think Sonic Youth & PJ Harvey’s lovechild) starts the killer lineup at 9pm…
