Beatbox » Zebulon Chalks It Up

Nass Gnawa - DJ Dutch Egerm

This past Sunday was a bittersweet coming together as our neighborhood celebrated ten years of Zebulon with one final night of music and friends. As I looked around the room at the early crowd – kids scampering about on the stage up front and their parents hanging back by the bar – I got to thinking: what would all of us have done without this place? Over the past decade it has served as a community hub for many of us: we watched World Cups and elections here: screaming and celebrating, we met our soul mates here (I met mine) and celebrated weddings (including my own), bid farewell to friends, welcomed new ones, chimed in new lives (including little Henri’s)…

Big Screen » Love Kills Demons

How does an artist move forward without forsaking his past? Take something he’s already made and give it new meaning? Over the course of one year, filmmaker Jim Helton documented New York-based artist Chris Rubino as he explored these paradigms and new direction in his work…

From: Tel Aviv » Crazy for Kozo Lamps!

A little bit Steampunk, a tad industrial loft makeover, these upcycled KOZO lamps are being produced by a 7-member collective called DEMO Design Clinic working out of Florentin (Tel Aviv’s Williamsburg doppelgänger)…

Papercuts » Happy 4th!!

Well, as miffed as I still am that the NYC fireworks display somehow crept over to the Hudson river three years ago and hasn’t returned to the east side since, it still was a lovely night on our roof here in Bushwickburg…

Beatbox » Up Died Sound @ Zebulon

Up Died Sound from left: Jonathan Leland (drums), Nicky Mao (guitar), and Tyler Nolan (guitar)

If you’re kicking about Williamsburg tomorrow night & not sure about where the musicophiles are hiding out, your best bet is to swing over to Zebulon on Wythe just off of Metropolitan for a completely free musical lineup including one of our local favorites, Up Died Sound. Part pop, part psychedelic jam band, Up Died’s free-spirited amble through their set is a pleasure to watch and hear. Mix that with the consistently top-notch ambiance of Zebulon, where you’re sure to overhear conversations in a good half dozen languages at any given time, and you’ve got yourself a bona fide cultural excursion. In the meantime, take a listen to my favorite Up Died track: Emotion Sickness…

Kawaii! » Goobie the Cat Welcomes Spring!

Goobie the Cat welcomes spring with a good snooze in the sun!

Just a quick snap from another glorious day in the ‘Burg! Goobie the Cat took great advantage of the fat streams of sunshine flooding the front room for an afternoon-spanning nap of mega-kawaii proportions. Here’s the gem of the photoshoot… ♥ Lo (& Goobie the Cat)

Geekology » Electroman & Hubman to the Rescue

Kikkerland USB Hubman

The other day, on our Williamsburg P’tit Louis gift excursion, YZ and I sidetracked into Dijital Fix (in the Bedford Mini-Mall) for a quick peruse… Faced with geeky accessories galore, I couldn’t help but buy these two office helpers from ever-innovative Kikkerland. The Hubman is now smiling happily beside my Mac, charging the iPhone, connecting my zip drive, powering the keyboard light and serving as a nifty mouse-cord-extender when Goobie the Cat decides to snooze in one of his favorite spots: right in front of my computer screen…

Duck Duck Goose » Petit Louis’ First Care Package!

Louis Verzeaux Brodin

P’tit Louis Snug as a Bug / Photo: Thomas Brodin

To top off all the gifts from Santa, our very good friends and neighbors Lili & Thomas welcomed their son Louis Verzeaux Brodin into the world on December 27th. So, as any proper Tata would do, I headed out shopping for a care package. Fortunately, our neighborhood (Williamsburg) has some top-notch childrens’ shops and YZ & I, after much contemplation, settled on a trio of super-soft accessories…

Found @ Etsy » Death and Texas Does Bikewear!

Death and Texas Handlebar Bag

Ok, ok. So the ball & chain is right: I have a bag fetish. It’s actually a container obsession: our house is full of oddly shaped jars, vintage cans, quirky bowls & trays – all holding tchotkies I’ve gleaned over many years of foraging flea markets, boutiques and the like. But, yes, bags, pouches, fabric zippie things – sign me up. Now, although not one of the gazillion New Yorkers that swears by her bike (I’ve purchased a few over my NYC years, subsequently biked to some rendez-vous and parked the thing, only to leave it there, abandoned forever), I have officially fallen for the cowgirl meets fashionista meets bike-messenger accessories over at Death and Texas’ Etsy store…

Beatbox » Pink Noise Plays Clusterf#ck Showcase Tonight @ Glasslands

Pink Noise CMJ Glasslands Show

Any CMJ showcase called Clusterf#ck gets a couple snarky brownie points from me. Throw in a venue (Glasslands in Williamsburg) known for nudging bands like MGMT & Yeasayer into the spotlight and the potential for a effing good night is solid. Oh, did I mention? Brooklyn-based Israeli alt/punk band Pink Noise (think Sonic Youth & PJ Harvey’s lovechild) starts the killer lineup at 9pm…
